Bantayan: Getting To and From

Bantayan Island is situated on the northernmost part of the Province of Cebu. It is situated over 200km from Cebu City and reachable by bus or a private car. The island is composed of three municipalities– Sta. Fe, Bantayan, and Madridejos. If you want to enjoy the beaches, the best place to go to is Sta. Fe; at least that’s where we were headed.

Without a doubt, it is one of the most beautiful islands I’ve ever stepped on– it has clear blue waters, stretches of white sand, friendly and hospitable locals. Getting there, however, is somewhat a challenge; especially if you’re not a fan of long bus rides.

From Cebu City to Bantayan

Assuming you’re already in Cebu City, the journey starts at the North Bus Terminal. You will be making your way to the town of San Remegio, where you’ll ride from Hagnaya Port. Look for a sign for a bus that heads to Hagnaya or Bantayan. The bus takes around 4-5 hours to get to Bantayan so make sure you have enough food to bring with you. They will also have a 20-minute stop where you can buy food to enjoy as well as go to relieve yourself.

What to Remember from Your Bus Ride:

  • Buses to Hagnaya start their departure from 4:00 AM until 5:00 PM
  • There is a 20-minute stopover at Catmon where you can buy food or use the restroom
  • The Ceres bus says they offer free Wi-Fi but we never got to use it
  • They will also be offering on board entertainment via their small DVD in front of the bus
  • Remember that the bus takes around 3-5 hours travel time. The last ferry to Bantayan is at 4:30PM. Make sure to plan your travel well so you don’t end up staying the night in San Remegio.

Hagnaya Port to Bantayan Island

When you arrive at Hagnaya, you will have to alight the bus, purchase your ticket and pay the terminal fee. Since there are two shuttle ferry companies that service the area, you will just have to wait for the next to depart. The RORO (Roll On Roll Off) ferry leaves every hour so make sure you stay in the departure area. Once the RORO arrives, everyone in the departure area loads the ferry and chooses his/her own seat. It usually takes nearly 1.5 hours to reach Bantayan from this point.

* If you’re bringing a car, you can park at Hagnaya Port. They offer parking area where they cordon the area with a wire fence. The rate is P150 for overnight parking. Slots are limited, however. You may also bring your car with you to Bantayan as the roads in the island are wide enough for vehicles.

Arrival at Bantayan Island

From Hagnaya Port, the ferry docks at Sta. Fe, Bantayan. This is already the area where most of the beaches are situated. When you get off from the RORO, just walk to the entrance of the port and look for a tricycle or habal-habal driver. You can tell him the name of the beach resort you have a reservation with and he will take you there.

Getting to Cebu from Bantayan

When it’s time to leave, the process is basically the same. But if you would like to visit the town proper, you can ride a tricycle from your resort and tell the driver to take you to Bantayan. From there, you can catch a Ceres bus going directly to Cebu City. This bus costs more– P200.

The trip home is basically the same. You ride a tricycle to Sta. Fe port. When you arrive, you’ll have to buy a ticket for the RORO. But if you arrive in time for a bus, you’ll be able to buy your ticket directly from the bus conductor. Make sure that you buy your tickets ONLY from the person collecting from everyone else. If you’re a foreigner, you can ask a fellow bus passenger whom to pay for your ticket. We experienced a couple of foreigners who got into a mild argument with a conductor since they paid for their bus tickets with another guy. Thankfully, they were able to settle the issue.

Just like the bus going to Hagnaya, there will also be a 20-minute stopover at Catmon where you can eat your lunch. The bus we rode had a passenger that wanted to be dropped off at the downtown area of Cebu. We were able to stop right at SM City Cebu so it was easier to ride a cab. Just ask the bus conductor if you want to make sure.
